Calling all console gamers…

Published by at 8:59 am under gaming,The Kid

We are discussing with The Kid which game console to buy for the household.  We certainly think that 12-year-old boys should be able to keep up socially with at least some of the games currently popular.  On the other hand, he’ll likely be wanting us to play with him when he doesn’t have other friends over, so we want to make sure whatever we buy will have some games suitable for our interests as well.  The Kid has suggested an XBox 360 or XBox Live, I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far of the Wii, and Nathan has no strong opinion except to get more information. So it’s polling the internets time!

What, if any, are the social impressions attached to particular consoles? (Are there some that are “more cool/more lame” than others, and if so what’s the spectrum?)

What console(s) seems to have quality games produced regularly for it? (if that even happens anymore? It’s been 15 years since I last owned one — from the Playstation era)

Are there any consoles yet that will play games from other manufacturers, or are they STILL doing the proprietary game crap?

Do you have particular favorites/most hated consoles, and why for each?

Do you have an opinion on which console would best suit our family needs? (decent games, with at least some appeal to a broad age spectrum)

Thanks for the help, Fearless Readers!

Though the Wii is widely considered the best “family” console, I think the breadth and depth of the XBox360’s online library is a deal-maker if you’ve got a kid who wants to be a “gamer” and a family that wants to play along. 🙂 Nothing says “bonding” like a 4-person game of Castle Crashers!

Perception? Well, most serious gamers are disappointed in the Wii and it has a limited catalog of games if you choose rpg or shooters.

Xbox 360 is the console that has been on the market the longest and has a huge catalog of games of all genres. With the exception of a select group of game makers most all games are produced for the Xbox360.

No, there is not a console that plays all games but Xbox360 comes close; however, if your 12 year old is a devoted fan of a series like Zelda (Wii) or Metal Gear Solid(PS3) the Xbox360 may be a disappointment — at first.

As for the console with the broadest appeal – my family’s favorite is the 360. In our family, the three women are the gamers, so that’s a 55 yr old,20 and 27 and we each have a 360 and haven’t been disappointed yet.
My youngest daughter also has a Wii and still prefers the 360.

    Hope this helps.

You might want to talk to Tori about the Wii. She has one at home and enjoys the games. Wii has active things that exercise the body as well as the mind in the Wii exercise programs, bowling game, etc. As you know, your dad has always been a really strong PC gamer and Tori also enjoys being a PC gamer. We have neither a console nor a Wii and it may be unlikely that we will have interest in either. So, all I can offer is the suggestion of talking to Tori.
