@Cheryl -- I think you're right about writing outside comfort zones!

@Mary -- I try to do con reports when I can manage it, sometimes better and more thoroughly than others. I did mention some of my thoughts to Steve but not the panel as a whole, will keep that in mind for next time. All signs indicate Dylan will be geeky like his folks, so might as well start the positive experiences on that early!

Reesa, it was good of you to share your notes re the panels at ArmadilloCon. They are especially valuable for those who would have liked to attend and were unable to do so. Your notes are also good for attendees in hearing your take on the panels and what you got out of them. I hope you and others shared the things about the panels that were in the minus column for future improvement. Having AC as a fun, learning, and sharing experience for Dylan was a good idea. Glad he enjoyed it.

Wow! I really enjoyed the LGBT panel as well, more than I expected. I certainly see that writing about the characters as multi-dimensional rather than "and he was gay" makes a much better story. I could see that same idea expanded to writing about anything that isn't in your comfort zone as well- getting inside the head of someone of a different color, culture, ability, or sexual orientation uses the same skills. I had a wonderful time once writing a story from inside the head of a male Dom!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences on the other panels (I didn't get to those). And, yes, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Lee Thomas speak on a couple of different panels. I have not read his work and don't read horror, but might want to just to see what it is that he does.
